One could make a very compelling argument that 2008 was the most important year in the history of smartphones. Not 1992 when IBM unveiled the first smartphone ever, not 1998 when Symbian planted its roots, and not 2007 when Apple reinvented the smartphone with its first-generation iPhone. Why 2008? Because that’s the year when Apple introduced the App Store alongside the iPhone 3G and iPhone OS 2.0. Third-party apps were nothing new at the time, but they were an absolute disaster on every major smartphone platform. Installing them meant going to a third-party app store on your PC, buying apps, downloading them to your computer, and connecting your smartphone to your PC in order to install the new apps.

The first few presets (available in the free app) gives you an indication of what’s in store, making videos and stills alike look as if they’re being displayed on an ancient, very broken television. The App Store was nothing short of a total game-changer. The idea of placing a third-party software portal directly on a smartphone and performing direct installations seems so simple now, but at the time it opened up a whole new world of possibilities. Apps, as most people will agree, are pivotal to the smartphone experience. Despite the wealth of available options, the interface is initially quite minimal, with a modes strip across the top of the screen, a zoom slider, and the shutter. But tap the + button and you reveal further modes, including a timer, a stabilizer and smile detection.

Similarly, tap the viewfinder area and Camera+ enters a ‘pro’ mode, with manual controls, and scene options for shooting under specific lighting conditions. The interface is finicky compared to Obscura 2, but Camera+ is undoubtedly powerful.

Visionist uses neural networks to ape various types of artwork. Load a photo and it’s instantly reworked as a virtual painting that resembles something expensive you’d find hanging on a gallery wall.

Pay for the IAP and you get 70 styles (10 come for free). They could do with being grouped and labeled, but you do at least get control over how they’re applied: each style offers three levels of abstraction, and there are settings for how it interacts with the original imagery.

It's pretty amazing to think that Apple's mobile operating system is already nearly 10 years old, with the recently released iPhone at AT&T shipping with iOS 10. The first iPhone couldn't even run third-party apps if you can imagine that, but since then those apps have been paramount to the phone's success.
